McHenry man killed in Fox Lake car crash

A 21-year-old McHenry man is dead and two others are hospitalized after a vehicle crashed into a tree Saturday afternoon in Fox Lake, authorities said.

David J. Letchinger, Jr. was extricated from the crushed 2004 Subaru and airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he died overnight, said Fox Lake Police Lt. Mark Schindler.

The driver of the car fled from the scene but was captured, Schindler said. Charges are pending and alcohol may have played a factor, he added.

The one-vehicle crash occurred at 4:06 p.m. Saturday on Nippersink Boulevard, a short residential street that runs north of Grand Avenue along Nippersink Lake.

Battalion Chief Ed Lescher of the Fox Lake Fire Department said it took firefighters about 40 minutes to extricate Letchinger. Both the driver and the surviving passenger remain at Advocate Condell Medical Center, authorities said. Their conditions were not available Sunday night.
