Mom, son charged with Willowbrook killing

A mother and son have been charged in connection with a Willowbrook man’s murder in broad daylight Monday.

Juan Cueller, 23, of the 10S700 block of Lilac Lane in Willowbrook, is accused of shooting 18-year-old Joshua Holmes six times about 6:35 p.m. in the area of Honeysuckle Rose and Hyacinth Lanes in an unincorporated area near Willowbrook.

Authorities said witnesses saw a driver approach the intersection and shoot Holmes through a passenger-side window after Holmes walked up to the vehicle.

“These senseless killings have to stop,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin said in a news release. “Day after day we hear stories of street violence that has claimed the life of yet another young person. People have got to learn that violence is not the answer.”

Cueller was arrested at his home Wednesday after an investigation by the sheriff’s office. His mother, Elva Hernandez, 42, has been charged with obstructing the investigation and is being held on $150,000 bail.

Judge Karen Wilson denied bond for Cueller on Thursday.
