2nd man running for Geneva 1st Ward

Geneva Historic Preservation Commissioner Mike Bruno is running for 1st Ward alderman.

Bruno will officially announce his candidacy at a news conference at 3 p.m. Wednesday at his home at 522 Fulton St.

He is the second person to run for the post. Zac Ploppert is also running.

Alderman Sam Hill is not seeking re-election.

Candidates can start circulating election petitions Sept. 25, and must file them between Dec. 17 and 24. The election is April 9.

Bruno, who grew up in Elgin, has lived in Geneva for 25 years. He owns 1st Layers Computer Consulting.

He spoke to the city council earlier this year, as a private citizen, against the proposed demolition of the former Pure Oil gas station building on West State Street. In May, he voted to approve a plan to turn the building into a drive-up facility for a bank. The bank would be located in an adjacent building.

He also served on a 2006 city task force that studied whether to ask Geneva voters to give the city home rule powers.
