Elgin man caught with 8 pounds of pot blames it on dad

A 20-year-old from Elgin was arrested on charges of possessing more than eight pounds of marijuana.

And promptly told police it belonged to his dad, who had been picked up earlier in the week on a different set of drug charges.

Joseph J. Johnson of the 400 block of Regent Street faces felony charges of marijuana possession after a traffic stop at 5:41 p.m. Friday in the 600 block of Villa Street in Elgin.

According to a police, Johnson was a passenger in a car that the driver later gave authorities consent to search; officers found two large black garbage bags in the trunk that contained plastic containers filled with pot.

The 3,632 grams of pot equates to just more than 8 pounds of pot.

According to a report, Johnson told police he was asked to take the drugs to a friend of his father's and that authorities had arrested Johnson's father earlier in the week but failed to locate the marijuana.

The father — Joseph L. Johnson, 38, of the 0-99 block of Pioneer Park Place, Elgin — was arrested after a traffic stop two days earlier after he failed to stop at a crosswalk at Dwight and St. Charles streets on Elgin's southwest side. Police learned he was on parole, patted him down and found a small bag of cocaine, a report said. They searched his car and also found 12 hydrocodone pills and a small amount of marijuana, according to a police report.

He is being held at the Kane County jail on $75,000 bail. He is next due in court on felony drug possession charges on June 14.

His son also is being held on $75,000 bail and is due in court on Thursday. The most serious charge carries a prison term of up to 15 years.
