Autopsy finished on man shot by Des Plaines police

The autopsy is complete and results are expected to be released today on an Elk Grove Township man who was shot and killed by Des Plaines police Sunday.

Carlos Salgado, 44, who lived in the Oasis Mobile Home Park, was killed yesterday in circumstances that are being investigated by the Illinois State Police.

Details of what led to the shooting have not been released by either the Des Plaines police or the Illinois State Police. According to Des Plaines Sgt. Michael Holdman, police stopped Salgado for a traffic violation Sunday afternoon on the 1900 block of East Touhy Avenue, and Salgado's blue Hyundai Elantra and the squad car drove into the parking lot of a shopping center.

The officer who made the stop called for backup and a second officer came, Holdway said.

What happened next is unclear. But shortly thereafter, the two officers were injured and Salgado was shot in his car. Holdway confirmed that the officers were not shot, but he would not detail how they were injured. Nor would he say how many shots were fired at Salgado or if one, or both officers fired at him.

The officers were treated at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and released, Holdway confirmed. He said they are taking a couple of days away from the department.

The Des Plaines Police Department cannot talk to the officers who were involved in the shooting until the State Police has finished its investigation, which will likely take a couple of days, Holdway said.

Meanwhile, the Des Plaines police are continuing to investigate the cause of the traffic stop. Once the State Police are finished, the police will also review the findings and determine if the officers correctly followed the department's own procedures.

Holdway said Salgado had an “extensive criminal history” but would not elaborate, other than to say he was known to many officers.

At the scene of the shooting Sunday afternoon the parking lot was taped off as the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force investigated. The Hyundai Elantra was parked in the middle of the lot with its driver's-side door open.
