Barrington second at Glenbrook North

Barrington’s boys volleyball team cruised through four straight pool-play victories to qualify for the championship match of the Glenbrook North tournament.

The Spartans proved ungracious hosts, though, topping the Broncos 25-19, 25-21 in the title match Saturday.

All-tournament pick Tommy Leonard led the way for Barrington (25-6) on attack with a tournament total of 38 kills. Charlie Spry had 27 and Jeff Hochstein 24.

Taylor Ganzer had 90 setting assists for the Broncos, while Austin Czarnecki had a team-best 53 digs, Leonard led the way with 14 blocks and Charlie Kingwill served 5 aces.

Barrington earned two-set wins over Lake Zurich, Oak Park-River Forest, Schurz and Stevenson.

Stevenson beat Vernon Hills 20-25, 30-28, 25-22 in the third-place match. Libertyville took fifth place and Evanston was seventh.

at Leyden: Wheeling powered to a perfect 5-0 performance at Leyden to take the tournament title in a round-robin format.

The Wildcats (13-18) needed three sets in only one of the their matches, a 25-23, 21-25, 15-12 victory over the host Eagles. Wheeling also defeated Streamwood, Fenton, Conant and Payton.

On attack, Wheeling was led by Brandon Fox (36 kills), Zack Nauert (27) and Kevin Leska.

Leska had 10 blocks; Nauert had 19 digs and Frank Stankowicz had 17.

Brandon Yacu was 108-for-110 setting with 53 assists and also provided 16 digs, 18 kills and a 29-for-34 service effort with 4 aces.

Fox was 36-for-41 serving with 8 aces; Nauert had 6 aces.

at Lincoln-Way East: Buffalo Grove won three pool-play matches in two sets before falling in the semifinals to host Lincoln-Way East and finally beating Naperville North in the third-place match 25-23, 19-25, 18-16.

Matt Bloom totaled 57 kills for the Bison (21-10); Sam Wacker had 41 and Evan Bunnetto had 40.

Michael Starzec led the way at the net with 29 blocks and Wacker had 23.

Mike Maley had a team-best 62 digs and Bunnetto had 41. Bloom provided 97 setting assists and Chris Szewczyk had 37.

at Bartlett: Schaumburg and Hersey made it through pool play of Bartlett’s boys volleyball invitational on Saturday to meet in the championship, where the Saxons got the better of the Huskies 20-25, 25-21, 15-11.

Hersey defeated St. Charles North in two sets and won three-setters over Plainfield Central and Rolling Meadows in pool play.

Schaumburg topped Rolling Meadows, Plainfied Central and Geneva in pool play. The Saxons dropped a two-setter to St. Charles North in pool play but still advanced to the championship.

Top hitters for the Huskies were Kevin Schroeder (38 kills) and Mike Fuerst (33). Mark Cayton was 290-for-291 setting with 113 assists, and Bart Migus led the way serving with 58-for-67 and 11 aces.

at York: Hoffman Estates defeated Joliet Central but lost to Fenwick and York before dropping a 27-26, 25-23 thriller to Lake Forest in the fifth-place match.

Gabe Alvelo had 22 kills and Gregg Lugo 19 for the Hawks. Alvelo also led the way with 37 assists and had a 32-for-33 serving effort with 4 aces.

Patrick Tednes had a team-best 62 digs, Shaurya Patel had 29 and also went 32-for-35 serving with 2 aces.
