Theis prevails in Dem primary for Supreme Court

Chicago Democrat Mary Jane Theis Tuesday garnered 189,692 votes, or more than 50 percent, prevailing in the 1st District Democratic primary for the Illinois Supreme Court, according to the Board of Elections and Cook County Clerk websites.

Theis was appointed to the high court in 2010. Besides Theis, candidates include 1st District Appellate Court Justice Joy Virginia Cunningham; Cook County Circuit Court Judge Aurelia Pucinski, and Winnetka attorney Thomas W. Flannigan, who refused to accept campaign contributions.

The candidates collectively raised more than $1.6 million.

Republican James Gerard Riley ran unopposed.
