Dold to hold round-table on suburban heroin issue

U.S. Congressman Bob Dold is holding a round-table Monday in Waukegan with several Lake County government and law enforcement officials to discuss ways to raise awareness of the ongoing heroin problem facing suburban families.

Spurred by numerous reports in the Daily Herald about the toll drug abuse has taken in the suburbs, the Kenilworth Republican organized the gathering.

Representatives from Dold’s office said the congressman hopes Monday’s meeting with county officials will lead to more public events to raise awareness of the problem. A Roosevelt University study showed that the Chicago area was the worst in the nation for heroin abuse.

Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran, Lake County Board Chairman David Stolman, Regional Superintendent of Schools Roycealee Wood and Lake County Health Department Executive Director Irene Pierce are some of the county officials who will be meeting with Dold. Michelle Hines, a Lake Zurich mom who has been active with the anti-heroin nonprofit support group Hearts of Hope, will also attend the round-table along with representatives from the Robert Crown Centers for Health Education, Dold officials said.

The gathering is not open to the public.

“Congressman Dold has heard from community leaders, parents and others about the devastating impact heroin has had on Lake County,” said Dold spokeswoman Stefani Zimmerman. “He is committed to working with the local community to raise awareness to help educate young people on the danger of this drug and others.”
