Volo man killed in snowmobile crash was drunk

A 39-year-old Volo man who died in a snowmobile accident Friday night had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit, authorities announced Tuesday.

Shane Diaz struck a cable gate at the Lakewood Forest Preserve near Route 176 and Fairfield Road in Wauconda shortly before 10 p.m. Friday and was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey originally said neither drugs nor alcohol played a factor in the crash, but toxicology results released Tuesday indicated his blood-alcohol level was more than twice the limit of .08, according to the coroner’s office.

Authorities said Diaz was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash but died from blunt force trauma.
