North Aurora awards to be given Tuesday

The North Aurora Lions Club will bestow the 2011 Police Officer of the Year award at its annual banquet Tuesday.

The ceremony is at 8 p.m. at the Lincoln Inn on Route 31 in Batavia.

Police officers Michael Quinn, Randy Voss and Ryan McKiness were nominated by their supervisors, according to a statement from the North Aurora Police Department.

In May, Quinn was dispatched to an accident involving two cars and a motorcycle. One of the cars was on fire. Quinn used a fire extinguisher to break into the vehicle and remove the trapped victim, then doused the fire.

Quinn was named Officer of the Year in 2007.

In July, Voss was dispatched to a report of a tree down on power lines. When he got there, he noticed smoke coming from a house; a power line had fallen onto a fence, which was conducting electricity to the house, melting the siding and gutters. Voss carried an uncooperative elderly woman from the house.

In September, McKiness was investigating a crash in which the driver was unconscious and not breathing. Private citizens were performing CPR, which he took over until paramedics arrived and used a defibrillator to restore the heart’s rhythm. The man, who had suffered a heart attack, survived.

The Lions will also name the North Auroran of the Year and Firefighter of the Year at the ceremony.
