Oil spills into Glendale Hts. creek

Glendale Heights announced that a cleanup effort is under way after oil from a storage tank at Midas Muffler Shop, 2151 Bloomingdale Road, leaked into a small creek northeast of the intersection of Whitman and George Bell Drive.

The spill poses no public health risk to residents, the village said.

The Bloomingdale Fire Protection District notified Glendale Heights police about 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday. The spill was divulged by the village of Glendale Heights on Friday.

After the oil was detected, the area was checked and the presence of an oily substance in the creek was confirmed, the village said in a news release.

The Glendale Heights Public Services Department responded and traced the source of the oily substance to the storage tank. The oil traveled through the storm sewer system into the creek.

Glendale Heights Public Services crews began a cleanup effort to minimize environmental damage. The village, in conjunction with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, is working with the owner of Midas in a cooperative effort to mitigate the spill.

An environmental cleanup company, SET Environmental Inc. of Wheeling, will be working in the area to remove the oil from the storm drain system and creek.
