Saddle up for ‘Taming of the Shrew’ at Maine West High School in Des Plaines

Get ready, theater lovers. On Oct. 13-15, Maine West High School will present Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” as you have never seen it before: updated to take place in the Wild West.

“This marks the return of Shakespeare to the Maine West stage after 12 years,” said director and Maine West fine arts teacher Brent Shaphren. “Students are having fun bringing Shakespeare’s dialogue to life with a Western spin. Giant super titles over the stage will help audience understanding by providing a modern-day ‘translation’ of the dialogue.”

More than 40 students are involved both on stage and behind the scenes. Faculty leadership is provided by Shaphren, Technical Director Chris Jensen and Sally Fortier, who is heading up costume production.

The production opens at 7 p.m. Thursday at the school, 1755 S. Wolf Road, Des Plaines. Cast and crew will present a special early afternoon performance at 4 p.m. Friday and the final performance will be at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets cost $7 for adults and $3 for students. Additional information may be obtained by calling (847) 803-5895.

The cast includes Matthew Holtz, Angie Panganiban, Jake Gertie, Jeremiah Aujero, Nicole Jovicevic, Elizabeth Stenholt, Bob Chesler, Jess Molina, Tess McDonald, Kayt Williams, Caitlin Graham, Deirdre Savaria, Cat Bustos, Sarah Brooks, Casie Panganiban and Lucas Katurbasz.
