Families in mob case lose appeal over $8.5M award
BOSTON — A federal court has refused to hear an appeal from the families of two men allegedly killed by former Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger.
They were trying to claim $8.5 million in damages that lower courts had ordered the FBI to pay.
The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday upheld an earlier decision that ruled the families of Michael Donahue and Edward “Brian” Halloran did not file their claims within the statute of limitations.
Bulger and another member of his gang are alleged to have shot Halloran on the waterfront in 1982. Donahue was an unintended victim who had offered Halloran a ride home.
Bulger was an FBI informant at the time, and two judges ordered the FBI to pay damages to the families.
