Savers thrift store to move to Carol Stream

A “higher-end” retail thrift store is coming to Carol Stream next year to occupy part of a multi-tenant shopping center that has sat vacant for two years.

Savers, with locations in Naperville and Downers Grove, will open next April at 1175 N. Gary Ave., according to Eric Cheung, vice president of the Windfall Group, the property manager.

The store will occupy a 35,667-square-foot “mid-size box” space at the north end of the building.

An ethnic grocery had formerly considered locating there, but that plan fell through.

Savers, which accepts donations of reusable clothing and household items, is also opening a new location in Crystal Lake in November, according to the company's website.

The entire Carol Stream property has been vacant since Value City left, but after Windfall purchased the space in March, plans have been in place to update the building and bring in new tenants.

Officials announced this summer that the property would be anchored by Cabinets & Granite Direct, a company of Cleveland-based Direct Import Home Décor, an importer and wholesaler of granite and cabinets. The company will conduct sales from a showroom and operate a 47,000-square-foot warehouse distribution facility.

Cheung said Windfall and Direct Import Home Décor are sister companies.

The building is being renovated to allow for 16,000 square feet of small shop retail space that would face Gary Avenue, but so far no tenants have been secured for that space, Cheung said.
