Volo woman struck and killed as she tried to check mail

A Volo woman crossing Route 12 to check her mail was struck and killed by a vehicle Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Ellen Bollinger, 52, of the 30600 block of Route 12, was hit by a southbound Toyota Corolla at 2:26 p.m., and she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Sgt. Timothy Jonites of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Jonites said the victim lived on the west side of the road, and she was crossing to get to her mailbox on the east side when she was struck.

At that time of day, Route 12 south of Route 120 is “usually always pretty heavily traveled,” Jonites said.

Jim Kirby, who lives on the west side of Route 12, said many of his neighbors have their mailboxes on the east side of the road. It’s common for those on the west side to have to cross the busy street — with cars going upwards of 65 mph, he said.

“I use a post office box to avoid having to go over there,” Kirby said.

The road was fully reopened by 4:50 p.m. Friday, Jonites said.

Potential citations against the driver were pending, he said.
