House bill targets aid to Pakistan

WASHINGTON — House Republicans have unveiled a foreign aid bill that restricts U.S. taxpayer dollars to Pakistan if it fails to cooperate in the war on terror.

The legislation released Tuesday also would ban giving federal money to international groups that perform abortions or provide abortion information, an effort to reverse Obama administration policy.

The overall bill totals $47.2 billion and is $3.6 billion less than President Barack Obama requested.

The bill would cut U.S. contributions to the United Nations and trim spending for the U.S. Agency for International Development. Aid to Pakistan would be contingent on the secretary of state reassuring Congress of Islamabad's effort in combating terrorism.

The House Appropriations subcommittee on foreign operations will consider the legislation on Wednesday.
