Roselle man killed by train

A 45-year-old Roselle man was struck and killed by a train Wednesday night — only a block from the nursing and rehab facility where he lived, authorities said Friday.

Ronald Haven Smith, 45, was hit by an inbound Metra Milwaukee District West Line train at 9:52 p.m. near the Roselle station, Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.

Officials from the Abbington Rehab and Nursing Center, 31 W. Central Ave., identified the victim as a walkway from their facility, according to a police report.

A Roselle police officer found an electronic monitoring device on the victim’s ankle. The man may have been able to deactivate it, the report stated.

A train engineer reported that he saw the man leaning over the tracks, and two witnesses stated that they saw him trying to cross but he had problems walking, Reile said.

It’s unclear if the fatal crash was an accident or suicide, Reile said.

An official from the DuPage County coroner’s office said the man was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:20 p.m., and the preliminary cause of death was “multiple traumatic injuries.”
