Elgin gang unit investigates Sunday shooting

Police found Lucio Estrada of Elgin outside his home around 5:40 p.m. suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, where he was pronounced dead, department spokeswoman Sue Olafson said.

As of midday Monday, police had no suspects and no one in custody.

“We’re still investigating,” Olafson said.

The shooting came less than a week after an 18-year-old man was shot to death on the 800 block of Arthur Drive.

The Elgin Police Department’s gang unit is investigating the Sunday shooting, but Olafson declined to say why police believe the slaying was gang-related.

Next-door neighbor John Burner said he was sitting on his porch Sunday when he saw a man he didn’t know walking by on the sidewalk.

“I was sitting here,” Burner said. “He walked by. I didn’t pay any attention.”

Then Burner heard six pops.

“I thought he was shooting off firecrackers,” he said. “Then I saw he had a gun,” which Burner described as a pistol.

Burner ran inside and called 911. When he came back out the shooter had already fled, and Estrada was lying on the porch.

“It’s upsetting,” Burner said. “When it’s right next door, that makes it bad. When someone gets killed, that’s even worse.”

Several relatives and friends were gathered at Estrada’s home Monday. They declined to speak about Estrada. Other neighbors said they didn’t know Estrada well and didn’t witness the shooting.

On July 4, 18-year-old Guillermo Pineda was killed when Donald Rattanavong, 57, shot at a group of teenagers that he thought was trying to break into his car, police said.

Police later determined no one had entered Rattanavong’s car. He was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
