Ill. House-Senate panel to study business tax climate

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois lawmakers will study the state's business-tax climate and look for ideas from employers and other taxpayers.

House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton announced a joint legislative committee Thursday to take up the issue.

Cullerton says it could make way for a "holistic" approach to business taxes to make them fairer rather than implementing small changes that often pit businesses against one another.

Tax breaks for businesses have come under media scrutiny. Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman and others have said they're concerned about the tax system.

A timetable for public hearings will be announced later.
