Wheeling OKs compressed natural gas station

The Wheeling Village Board Monday gave the go ahead to Waste Management to operate a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station in the village.

“It’s good to see something going on besides gasoline,” Trustee Ken Brady said.

Waste Management already has three tanks in place to fuel its own fleet of garbage trucks with CNG. Monday’s decision allows Waste Management to sell gas to vehicles operated by other companies preapproved by Waste Management.

The village required Waste Management to cap the number of sales at 150 per day to prevent heavy truck traffic on South Milwaukee Avenue and Sumac Road.

Trustee Dean Argiris said he wanted the village to eventually look into using the filling station for its village fleet because he thought CNG might be less expensive than traditional gasoline and diesel fuels.
