Could Kings be on the move to Anaheim?

This might have been the last time the Bulls ever play the Sacramento Kings.

Speculation is rampant that the Kings are planning a move to Anaheim, Calif., next season. Mayor Kevin Johnson told the Sacramento Bee recently he doesn’t think the city can do anything to prevent the move. The only hope is if talks with Anaheim break down.

Los Angeles already has a Kings team in hockey, so the basketball team may dip into its past for a new nickname. There are reports the Kings have reserved the name Anaheim Royals, among other combinations.

The Kings were known as the Rochester and Cincinnati Royals early in their existence. They moved to Sacramento in 1985 but play in an out-of-date arena.

For the NBA, this would be another case of abandoning a market with a traditionally strong fan base. The Seattle SuperSonics were the last franchise to move, jumping to Oklahoma City in 2008.

Bulls forward Brian Scalabrine grew up near Seattle in Enumclaw, Wash. He didn’t get emotional about the Sonics’ departure, though.

“You’ve got to remember, it’s still guys running a business,” Scalabrine said. “From a fan standpoint, it’s disappointing that the Sonics left Seattle. But these guys have responsibilities to their team.”
