Only in Indiana: A lakefront riverside?

HOBART, Ind. — Hobart 's development director wants the city council to designate a section of downtown as a riverfront district even though it lacks a river.

The Times of Munster reports that development director Denarie Kane told council members the designation is another tool to attract businesses downtown. That's because it would draw upscale eateries and bars to the downtown through incentives linked to a less expensive annual liquor licenses.

Kane's assistant, Sherryl Doerr, says Hobart's Lake George qualifies for the riverfront district designation because Deep River feeds into the lake. She said the district would have to remain roughly within three blocks of the lake.

The council didn't take any action, but most members spoke favorably of the idea and said they likely would form a study group.
