U-46 recognizes school achievement

This month's school board meeting in Elgin Area School District U-46 was a winter wonderland.

Not so much because of holiday cheer, but because it was freezing.

The meeting was moved from the board room in the administration center to the auditorium, where someone apparently forgot to turn on the heat.

Despite the frigid temperatures, everyone was in good spirits as the board and administration handed out awards to 32 schools that did well on their spring standardized assessments.

The first group of schools recognized made adequate yearly progress, as defined by the state, and showed growth in reading and math. They are Bartlett, Clinton, Hanover Countryside, Spring Trail, Timber Trails and Willard elementary schools.

The second group made adequate yearly progress. Those schools are Centennial, Glenbrook, Hawk Hollow, Horizon, Prairieview, Sycamore Trails and Wayne elementary schools as well as Eastview, Kenyon Woods and Tefft middle schools.

A third group showed gains in math and reading. The group includes Fox Meadow, Garfield, Highland, Hillcrest, Laurel Hill, Parkwood and Sunnydale elementary schools as well as Kimball and Larsen middle schools.

The fourth group exhibited growth in reading. They schools are Horizon, Lincoln, Sheridan and Washington elementary schools.

The fifth group was recognized for math gains. Those schools are Coleman, Creekside, Harriet Gifford and Wayne elementary schools; Eastview and Kenyon Woods middle schools; and Bartlett, Elgin, Larkin, South Elgin and Streamwood high schools.
