Cleanup of Schaumburg house scheduled for Wednesday

The Village of Schaumburg has chosen a vendor to clean the home of 62-year-old John Wuerffel, owner of the rubbish-strewn residence in the 1400 block of Hampton Lane.

The removal of rubbish classed as recyclable materials is set to begin Wednesday. The cleanup will be paid for by the village of Schaumburg.

Schaumburg Public Health Officer Mary Passaglia said the winning vendor was chosen after four companies toured Wuerffel's home last week. Three of the companies provided the village with estimated costs for the removal. As of Friday, the village has yet to announce the name of the winning bidder.

Passaglia said Wuerffel has been cooperative since the court's ruling. Last week, he arranged to tow three broken vehicles from his driveway. He also removed some material from inside his house so junk removal companies could assess the amount of clutter.

Wuerffel will have until Wednesday to remove any non-personal belongings from his property before it is cleaned. All of Wuerffel's personal belongings and furniture will remain untouched, with only rubbish being removed.

Found guilty in early September of not keeping the interior and exterior of his residence free of rubbish, Wuerffel has been unable to live in his house since he has defaulted on paying the mortgage and utilities.

Wuerffel has been staying in local homeless shelters, which opened in early October. Before that, he was sleeping inside the recently towed vehicles.

Attempts to reach him Friday were unsuccessful.
