Mundelein cops win award:The Mundelein Police Department has received a 2010 Community Policing Award from the International Association of Chiefs and Cisco. The department was honored in a division for communities with 20,001 and 50,000 residents. The Evanston Police Department was honored in a division for larger towns.Hometown hero:U.S. Marine, Chief Warrant Officer, Bruce Johnson is the Round Lake Area Exchange Club's first Hometown Hero. Selected for October, Johnson is the founder of Mano a Mano Family Resource Center Foundation, CEO of NICASA and former chief of police for the Round Lake Park Police Department. His deployment to Afghanistan earlier this year was a catalyst for the program, according to Sherry Ridge, who chairs the project for the club. Any and all military personnel serving overseas or in the U.S. from any of the Round Lake areas, Hainesville, Fox Lake or Ingleside qualify for the program. Winners will receive a "Hanging with Heroes" care package filled with their favorite snacks and treats to share with their unit, and other items. The event on Church Street at Milwaukee Avenue downtown will feature three bands and a variety of beverages, including wines and craft beers, food and other goodies.
