Man injured in McHenry hit-and-run accident

A 45-year-old man was injured following a hit-and-run on Route 31 in McHenry early Tuesday morning.

Acting Chief John Jones of the McHenry Police Department said the unidentified male was walking on the shoulder of northbound Route 31 near Bull Valley Road when he was struck by a dark colored minivan from the early 1990s that was also heading northbound.

He said a witness to the accident was heading southbound in her car at 5:05 a.m. when the minivan swerved into her lane momentarily. The minivan then swerved out of her southbound lane and onto the northbound shoulder of the road, where the victim was hit.

He said the witness thought the minivan hit a deer at first, but then realized the van hit the unknown male. The van then fled the scene.

Jones said police were called and found the victim in the roadway with a massive head wound and a broken leg. He said the witness also stopped, along with two other motorists who had blocked traffic to prevent cars from hitting the injured person.

The victim was flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where his condition is unknown at this time.

Route 31 was shut down for nearly two hours while the accident is investigated. He added other police departments have been alerted to be on the lookout for the dark-colored minivan with massive front-end damage.
