Elgin man gets 5 years for stabbing father

A Cook County judge sentenced an Elgin man to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to attacking his father.

In exchange for his guilty plea to aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, prosecutors dropped an attempted first-degree murder charge against Jeremiah Jefferson, of the 700 block of Jefferson Avenue. Had he been convicted of attempted murder, Jefferson could have faced up to 30 years in prison.

Police said Jefferson stabbed his father in the neck with an unknown object following an argument earlier this year.

The court also this week ordered the 33-year-old Jefferson to undergo mental health treatment. He received credit for the 132 days he's spent in Cook County Jail since his arrest.
