Pack 187 celebrates Boy Scouts 100th birthday

Sixty Cub Scouts and Webelos from Countryside School's Pack 187 gathered Friday, Feb. 5, to kick-off the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

The day began with the scouts leading all Countryside students in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance followed by each scout receiving a commemorative 100 Years of Scouting Northwest Suburban Council patch to be worn on their uniform shirts. "Our pack has an outstanding group of boys who live by the 'Do Your Best' spirit every day as they personally grow while helping others," said Patrick Kenny, Pack 187 committee chairman, who also added "Doing his best is one of the most essential beliefs for the Cub Scout to learn. Too often boys become so focused on winning that they fail to see the importance of doing the best they can whether it be in sports, classroom activities, play or special projects. Cub Scouting teaches boys that no one can find fault with them if they always do their best."

Pack 187 celebrations continued with a Scout Sunday Feb. 7; a special anniversary celebration at den meetings that included singing, cake, games and awards; and the 100th Anniversary Blue & Gold Banquet where scouts perform skits and receive rank badges (Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos) for completing program achievements and electives.

Also this month, The U.S. National Mint begins producing BSA silver dollars that will be available to the public on March 23, through its Web site, www.usmint.gov or by calling 800-USA-MINT. The government approved surcharges collected from the sale of each coin will go to the Boy Scouts of America National Foundation, which helps bring scouting to underserved communities.
