I'm Spartacus!

The Starz cable channel sexes up the ancient Spartacus story in the new series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand." Think of a beefcake version of "Xena: Warrior Princess." In fact, Lucy Lawless herself turns up as the wife of Spartacus' owner. It debuts at 9 p.m. today, Jan. 22, on Starz.

Classic 'Emma'

PBS' "Masterpiece Classic" plays it straight in a miniseries version of Jane Austen's "Emma" beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, on WTTW Channel 11. It doesn't figure to challenge "Clueless" as the best revisionist reworking of the novel. "The Electric Company" returns with new shows at 5 p.m. Monday, and "American Experience" examines the life of Wyatt Earp at 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, on Channel 11.

Brit teens

BBC America brings over the British take on the awkward teen TV series "The Inbetweeners" beginning at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25. It was created by Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, who worked on "Flight of the Conchords," and it was named best new sitcom of 2008 at the British Comedy Awards, so it might be worth a go.

More teen yuks

It's so "Superbad" it's good. It's a surprisingly funny take on teen sex comedies starring Michael Cera and with a script cowritten by Seth Rogen, who also puts in an appearance. It's at 5 p.m. tonight, Jan. 22, on FX.
