$500K bond for man charged with violating order of protection

Bond was set at $500,000 Tuesday for an Elk Grove Village man accused of violating an April 2009 order of protection by showing up intoxicated at his residence in the 700 block of Gloucester Drive.

Brendan Callaghan, 33, arrived at the residence at about 7:45 p.m. Jan. 6 and attacked a 69-year-old woman, said Assistant State's Attorney Caroline Kennedy during a hearing before Judge James Etchingham in a Third Municipal District courtroom in Rolling Meadows.

Callaghan knocked the woman to the floor, Kennedy said. As she attempted to leave, Callaghan followed her and tried to choke her with a power cord, Kennedy said. She fled the residence, pursued by Callaghan, who pushed her down onto the snow, causing her to hit her head and back, Kennedy said. Kennedy did not know if the victim had been treated for her injuries.

Callaghan then left the residence, after which the victim called for help, Kennedy said. A neighbor responded to her cries and notified police, she said.

Callaghan's criminal background includes: probation for a 1994 conviction for possession of a controlled substance and one-year conditional discharge for resisting a peace officer in 1998. He served 11 days in jail following a domestic battery conviction in 2009 and was ordered to undergo drug and alcohol evaluation, said Kennedy.

If convicted, Callaghan could face from one to three years in prison. He next appears in court on Feb. 2.
