Lincoln kids know something about healthy eating
Six Lincoln Middle School students have been named first place winners in this year's Healthy Choice Essay Contest, sponsored by the Cebrin Goodman Family Foundation.
They are being treated to an awards lunch today, Feb. 20, at Maggiano's Restaurant in Skokie.
The first place winners are Ashley Kmiec, Michael Almisry, Carson Burke, Meghan Doyle, Monica Rishko and Ben Nicholas.
Lincoln students were invited to write an essay on what is motivating them to choose a healthy lifestyle now and in the future. They were asked to pay special attention to issues like drug use and healthy eating.
"If I put good things into my body like exercise, healthy food, cheerful thoughts and surround myself with good people, the person I become will be someone who is respected and looked up to," one student wrote.
The Cebrin Goodman Foundation is a philanthropic organization which supports drug use prevention. Larry Goodman, the foundation's founder, suffered the loss of his granddaughter, Cebrin, to drugs. Since then, he and his family have become committed to preventing others from suffering a similar tragedy.
In addition to the luncheon which included a speaker, the first place winners got souvenir booklets containing all of the first place winning essays, a certificate and a check for $150.
Nine more Lincoln students were named runners-up and received $25 Barnes and Noble gift certificates. They are Kathryn Cichon, Harmony Youngquist, Justin Placko, Philip Masini, Callie Leone, Danny Thomas, Madeline Beattie, Allie Zach and Jenny Delaney.

Monarch Ball: Peter Goschy of Mount Prospect, a regional vice president for senior services at Resurrection Health Care and the administrator of the St. Benedict Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Niles, is one of the chairs of The Monarch Ball, Resurrection Health Care's annual black tie event.
It will be held March 7 at the Hilton Chicago Hotel and Towers, 720 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.
A huge event, with the theme of "Passport to the World," it will have entertainment by African drummers, Chinese dragon dancers and Dennis DeYoung and The Music of Styx.
In addition, Cardinal Francis George will deliver a message to the gathering.
Tickets for the gala are $350 per person and may be reserved by contacting Sandy Malkin at (847) 813-3465. Proceeds will support the West Suburban College of Nursing, a member of Resurrection Health Care.
Read Along: Prospect High School's Student Council will sponsor a "Read Along" for area children between the ages of 4 and 8 from 6:30-7:30 p.m., March 4 at the school, 801 W. Kensington Road, Mount Prospect.
The event is being held in conjunction with a birthday celebration for Dr. Seuss, the beloved children's author.
There is no charge for admission, but those attending should bring a slightly used book to exchange for another book. Parents and children should enter through Door 4 and parents are asked to remain with their children during the event.
