Long Grove deals with salt shortage

Just as Buffalo Grove dealt with the issue the week before, Long Grove took action on its own salt shortage last week.

Village manager David Lothspeich said Long Grove has been part of the state salt program for years, but no bids were received this year for Lake County.

He said the one provider he was able to find was overflow from the city of Kenosha, Wis. The village will be paying $60 a ton for 1,500 tons plus $9.25 a ton for delivery, compared to $140 or so a ton that the village was faced with paying otherwise.

Seeking young performers: Buffalo Grove will hold auditions for its Little Limelight Cafe on Sept. 26.

The performance itself will be held on Oct. 17. The cafe will feature performers from grades 2 to 8. The acts can be instrumental, vocal, dance, solos, duets or small groups.

Anyone interested in auditioning should call (847) 459-2518 or e-mail bgarts@vbg.org by this Friday.

Help build homes: A fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Katrina will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Sept. 27 at AMVETS Post 66, 700 McHenry Road, Wheeling.

The "Mardi Gras in the Fall" fundraiser will feature carnival games, prizes, live music, face painting and other family-friendly activities.

Cajun cuisine from Gumbo A Go-Go, Vienna hot dogs and Bob Chinn's food will be served. A donation of $5 is requested.

A raffle will be held to benefit the St. Bernard Project in New Orleans.

The fundraiser is being organized by Rebuilding the American Dream, which sends residents to New Orleans to rebuild homes devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Biggest losers visit Buffalo Grove: The Highland Park Hospital Health and Fitness Center in Buffalo Grove will host two contestants of NBC's "The Biggest Loser" to talk about weight loss.

Amy Hildreth and Marty Wolff will share their stories during a three-hour session at 6 p.m. Sept. 25. The discussion will include tips on overcoming emotional roadblocks.

The pair will also lead an all-levels boot camp preceding the lecture.

The lecture is free; however, reservations are required.

For more information, or to reserve a spot, contact the center, at 1501 Busch Parkway, Buffalo Grove, at (847) 229-0292 or visit hphfitness.com.
