A former Elgin police sergeant charged with stealing $34,000 from the police union over a six-year period surrendered to authorities Wednesday morning, posted bond and was given a May 10 court date.

William F. Wood Jr., 50, formerly of Elgin and now of Louisiana, was indicted Tuesday on charges of felony theft, which carry a punishment ranging from probation to up to seven years in prison.

Wood resigned from the department in August 2017 and is accused of breaching his fiduciary duties as union president, but not official police misconduct.

After authorities announced the charges Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said he was "disgusted" with learning of the allegations against Wood, whose bail was $30,000.
