Kenney's hit wins it; Firth strikes out 10
One game.
One hit.
One win.
Lakes' softball team made the head-coaching debut of Tia Martinez a success, as the Eagles won their season opener by a 1-0 final over visiting Stevenson on Tuesday.
"The air was definitely cold and so were our bats," Martinez said.
Stevenson (0-3) out-hit Lakes 4-1, but the Eagles managed the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Andrea Fullerton reached base on a walk and raced to third when Hannah Karstedt reached base on an infield error.
Nora Kenney then spoiled the no-hitter of Patriots pitcher Allie Micucci by singling over the second baseman's head.
Micucci had a perfect game through four innings. Tovah Schwartz was 2-for-3 for Stevenson.
Freshman Shannon Cooley earned the win.
"This was definitely a defensive game," Martinez said. "We were able to make the plays today. I must say that I am pleased with our efforts. It was nice to finally get out on the field and see what we really have with this young team."
