Driver killed in Libertyville crash

An 81-year-old Lincolnshire man died in a crash in after attempting to make a U-turn in front of another vehicle in Libertyville, police said Thursday.

Ronald Shlifka, of the 800 block of Suffield Square, was driving a 2003 Cadillac Deville west in the right lane on Route 173 about 7:10 p.m. Wednesday when he attempted to make a U-turn across the left lane in front of a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Christopher Thompson said.

The Jeep, driven by a 19-year-old Green Oaks woman, was westbound on Route 173 in the left lane and struck Shlifka's driver's side door when he attempted to turn in front of her.

Both vehicles then pulled over near the intersection before emergency crews arrived.

Shlifka and his wife Mildred, who was riding in the front passenger seat at the time of the accident, were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville after the crash.

Ronald Shlifka was pronounced dead at 10:50 p.m. His wife was treated at the hospital and released.

All three people involved in the accident were wearing seat belts.

An autopsy revealed Shlifka died of multiple traumatic injuries caused by the crash.
