Gunman robs Winthrop Harbor store
Winthrop Harbor police are searching for a gunman who robbed a local store Tuesday night.
The thief, who was armed with a handgun, stole about $925 from Smoke 4 Less, 545 Sheridan Road.
No shots were fired, but the robber punched a worker in the face. The victim did not require hospitalization, police said.
The robbery occurred about 7:30 p.m. The thief stole the money from behind the counter, police said. The worker couldn’t get the cash register open, police said.
During the robbery, a customer walked into the store and the gunman ordered him to open the register, police said. When that effort was unsuccessful, the robber left the store, police said.
The robber was described as a man in his 20s who was more than 6 feet tall. He was wearing a black-and-white hooded jacket with a large spider logo and black shoes.
