Elgin has much to crow about
Sitting through the AFLA mayoral forum and elaborate slide presentation, all I heard were complaints. No questions on the candidates’ future vision for Elgin or on proposed solutions.
I felt like I lived in a different Elgin. And if Doug Heaton hadn’t cut me off, I would have said how much I love this city.
Having lived in Chicago, Palatine, West Dundee, Washington D.C., Virginia, Europe, Canada, Mexico and South America, I can honestly say that Elgin is a great place to live and raise a family. I am proud that our crime rate is at a 30-year low. I am proud that our Centre puts those of Wheaton and Evanston, where we travel with the park district’s volleyball league, to shame.
I am proud that Elgin is focused on bringing artists to downtown to further promote increased shops, dining and entertainment. I am proud that we have many choices when it comes to living, eating, performing arts and recreation. I am proud that we have such a rich history, great museums, beautiful parks and an award winning library.
I am proud that Elgin is a leader in green initiatives not only to save the city money, but also to ensure its future sustainability. I am proud the city continues to attract both foreign and national companies. I am proud that so many residents and staff give back to the community through their extensive volunteer efforts.
Those who choose to constantly complain about these successes only hurt our image. Sure I’m bummed we lost our fireworks, Fox Fire Fest and spring cleanup, but life isn’t perfect. Nor is Elgin alone in suffering after the Great Recession. But we are way ahead of the game.
I remember feeling much like those complainers did the other night when I lived elsewhere. You know what I did? I moved to Elgin.
