St. Viator's Majkowski nets coaching honor

St. Viator's historic boys basketball season resulted in honors for head coach Joe Majkowski.

Majkowski was voted the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association District 4 co-coach of the year after the Lions set a school record for victories (24) and advanced to the Class 3A supersectional. Their sectional title was their first and their regional title was their third in school history.

"It's personally and professionallly satisfying to me, because it is a recognition that comes from other coaches in our area," Majkowski said in a release from the school. "It's not something I necessarily aspire to, but it reflects the success our team had this year, so it's very special to me."

Majkowski will be honored at the IBCA's April 24 banquet at Illinois State University. He also was named the East Suburban Catholic Conference coach of the year in 1997 when Viator won its only boys basketball varsity conference title.

Viator guard Alan Aboona and Fremd forward Chris Klimek were named IBCA fourth-team all-state selections in Class 3A/4A. Prospect's Joe LaTulip received special mention and Leyden's Mike Woolf, Fremd's Zach Monaghan and Rolling Meadows' Richie Kemph received honorable mention.
