Summer Reading Club kicks off with food festival June 9

Kids through 6th grade are invited to take a bite out of summer by participating in the Des Plaines Public Library's “Reading is SO Delicious” Summer Reading Club running June 9 through August 5, 2012.

Visit the library's 2nd floor to register and pick up a reading log. Then, read for a total of 16 hours and earn prizes at the halfway point and again when the final goal is reached.

Summer reading activities kick off on Saturday June 9th with a Fantastic Food Festival from 1:30 – 3:30. This free event features face painting, juggling, balloon art, cake decorating demonstrations, a chef's hat craft, Gooey Grub Guessing Game and light refreshments. This event is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

In addition to the reading club, DPPL has a delicious line up of drop-in programs and activities for the whole family! Highlights include a theatrical performance of If You Give a Cat a Cupcake on June 16; Food-A-Palooza, an afternoon of comedy, illusion, magic, storytelling and puppets on June 26; Fantastic Food Firsts featuring Chef Alphonse Dente talking about the origins of some of your favorite foods on June 28; and Dave Herzog's Marionettes: Puppet Soup, a delectable variety show on July 16.

Kids can also register for free food-related workshops, art programs, food science programs and more. Check out the complete list of summer programs for kids at www.dppl.org/taste/.
