Property owners can get answers to tax assessment questions in a live discussion at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 5. Lake County Treasurer Bob Skidmore and Chief County Assessment Officer Marty Paulson will answer the most frequently asked questions about property taxes and assessments. Questions can be submitted to communications@lakecountyil.gov. Questions may be read and answered on LCTV, Comcast Channels 18 or 30 or AT&T Channel 99 or on the Lake County website www.lakecountyil.gov. The session can be viewed on those channels or online.

Top nursing award:Hawthorn Woods resident Jenny Prescia received the Jean Ewing Nursing Excellence Award from Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital. She also received a Making a Difference award that included a $500 scholarship. A nurse case manager, Prescia has worked at the hospital for 20 years. Prescia's portrait will be displayed on the hospital's Nursing Wall of Clinical Excellence, and she will be the leader of the Clinical Recognition Council for one year.Watch out for burglars:Lake County authorities are warning homeowners to be alert for "ruse" burglaries. Victims are targeted because of their advanced age and the possibility they live alone, according to the Lake County Sheriff's office. The offenders usually travel in pairs with one distracting the homeowner while the other enters the home to search for and steal cash, jewelry and other items. Many storylines are used including: inquiries about water supply or pressure; an electrical problem; offer to repair gutters, fences, trim trees or perform other landscape work; blacktop or repair a driveway; making false statements about problems at a neighbor's house; or, inquires about homes for sale in the neighborhood. Anyone who feels they have been a victim or have seen suspicious vehicles or subjects approaching elderly neighbors should call (847) 549-5200 or 911 if the incident is in progress. Take note of the vehicle and license plate, if possible.Author coming to library:Author Elizabeth Berg will visit the Vernon Area Public Library in Lincolnshire on Sept. 14. She'll discuss her books and her newest work, "The Last Time I Saw You." The event is set for 7 to 9 p.m. at the library, 300 Olde Half Day Road.
