Prosecutors drop attempted sex assault charges against 70-year-old Elgin man
Cook County prosecutors have dropped attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault, unlawful restraint and other charges against a 70-year-old Elgin man.
Jon Fischer was charged with attacking a 16-year-old girl in July 2017, after which police say he held officers at bay during a three-hour standoff.
Fischer, who was incarcerated at Cook County jail, suffered serious injuries after fellow inmate Walter Adams attacked him around 7:15 a.m. July 27, 2017, authorities said.
According to jail officials, Fischer, Adams and other inmates were lying in their beds in Cermak Medical Center on a tier designated for detainees suffering from acute mental health issues.
Unprovoked, Adams got up, screamed obscenities and repeatedly punched and kicked Fischer in the head, according to an email from a sheriff's spokesman.
Jail employees responded and "found Fischer unresponsive on the floor and immediately began lifesaving measures," the spokesman said.
Adams was subsequently charged with attempted first degree murder and aggravated battery/great bodily harm in connection with the attack, which left Fischer with serious head injuries.
Fischer did not appear for subsequent court hearings, and authorities say he is unlikely to recover.
