Elgin man gets 17 years in prison for armed robbery of marijuana, $10
An Elgin man was sentenced Wednesday to 17 years in prison for robbing a man of an ounce of marijuana in 2018. Demetrius M. Cochran, 24, of the 1100 block of Fleetwood Drive, pleaded guilty to an amended charge of armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, a Class X felony. Cochran was facing an armed robbery with a gun charge. If he had been convicted on that charge, he would have been sentenced to at least 21 years in prison. Prosecutors agreed to dismiss other charges against Cochran as part of a plea agreement. Cochran was one of three people charged in a May 29, 2018 home invasion and shooting in the 0-100 block of North Edison Street in Elgin. Authorities said three men forced their way into the home and robbed a man of the marijuana and $10. The man sustained non-life-threatening injuries. According to Kane County Assistant State's Attorney Joe Gay, Cochran used the gun as a bludgeon. Cochran will have to serve at least half his sentence before being eligible for parole. He will receive credit for 514 of the 819 days he has spent in jail. Co-defendant Tyrell D. Sumling, 33, of Elgin, pleaded guilty in 2019 to felony home invasion with a dangerous weapon and was sentenced to 13½ years in prison. The other co-defendant, Frankie Rivera Jr., 26, of Carpentersville, pleaded guilty in 2020 to felony home invasion with a dangerous weapon and was sentenced to seven years in prison.
