Meet your local first responders at National Night Out events

National Night Out is an annual event held on the first Tuesday in August, intended to bring communities together to enhance the public’s relationship with local police and emergency personnel while building neighborhood spirit. This year’s official date is Tuesday, Aug. 5, although some events take place in the surrounding week.

Tuesday, July 29

Arlington Heights National Night Out: 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, at North School Park, North Evergreen Avenue and East Eastman Street, Arlington Heights. National Night Out celebrates police-community relationships that make Arlington Heights a safer place. Join for family entertainment, police dogs, food trucks and more. Friday, Aug. 1

South Elgin Back-to-School Night Out: 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at Panton Mill Park, 10 N. Water St., South Elgin. National Night Out combined with the annual Back-to-School Bash featuring family-friendly activities, bounce houses and more from 4-6 p.m. First responder vehicles and displays throughout the event. Blooze Brothers perform from 6-8 p.m. Tickets distributed starting at 4 p.m. for the “500 Backpack Giveaway”; child must be present to receive a ticket, one ticket per child. Campton Hills National Night Out: 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at United Church of Christ, 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd. Meet local police and first responders from nine neighboring police and fire agencies. This year, the event includes free food and beverages, including hot dogs from Jimmy’s Red Hots, chips, soda, water, cotton candy, Italian ice and ice cream. There will be a touch-a-truck display and more than 40 vendors offering free giveaways. Superior Air Med helicopter will make an appearance, along with a fire department vehicle extrication demonstration. The event also includes live music, face painting, a petting zoo, magician, bounce houses, dunk tank and a 60-foot inflatable obstacle course. There will be special appearances from “Skates” the Chicago Wolves Mascot, Kane County Cougar Mascots Ozzie and Annie, and the Chik-Fil-A Cow. Naperville National Night Out: 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6. Thirty-nine neighborhoods have registered to host National Night Out events with plans to enjoy bounce houses, ice cream socials, live music, food trucks, cookouts, kids’ parades and more. City employees from the police, fire, public works, and utility departments will attend many of the neighborhood events between 5 and 8 p.m. with cool trucks and equipment to show off, giveaways, and information for families. Oak Brook National Night Out: 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at new location, Oak Brook Bath & Tennis, 800 Oak Brook Road. Oak Brook Police Department has teamed up with the village’s Community Engagement Committee. Activities include: K9 Ghost Demo and Comfort K9 Bandit, DJ, drone demo, balloon artist, bouncy house, food and popcorn booth, hula hoop contests, Touch-A-Truck, visit from McGruff, and Ray Graham Animal Exhibit. Warrenville National Night Out: 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Cerny Park pavilion, 28W415 Forestview Drive S, Warrenville. This year, a Dunk-a-Cop fundraiser benefits Special Olympics Illinois ($5 for three balls), and Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics T-shirts (featuring Warrenville PD listed on the back) for $20. Elmhurst Public Safety Night Out: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at York Commons Park, 665 S. York St. Elmhurst’s police and fire departments host this annual safety-focused event featuring kids games and activities, giveaways, demonstrations, music, and a chance to get to know members from the public safety team. elmhurst.org.

Westmont Cruisin’ Nights Fire Truck Night: 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, on Cass Avenue, between Norfolk Street and Naperville Road in downtown Westmont. Co-hosted by Westmont Special Events and the Westmont Fire Department. Games for children, giveaways, tours of various fire department vehicles, photo ops with Sparky the Fire Dog, and more. At 9 p.m., the event will conclude with the annual Lights & Sirens Fire Truck Parade on Cass Avenue, which will begin at Burlington Avenue and head north to Naperville Road.
