Chicago Board of Ed votes to close 4th charter; 3 others seek transition help

The Chicago Board of Education has unanimously approved the June closure of a fourth charter school on the Far South Side, but before they took their vote, supporters of three schools already set to close asked for reconsideration - and for the supports Chicago Public Schools promised them.

The Larry Hawkins campus of Chicago International Charter School, 801 E. 133rd Place, was on the chopping block, after CPS said its academics were not up to par and it had not made enough progress to be allowed to continue educating seventh- through 12th-graders in the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood.

Interim CEO Mike Bower reminded the district of its own history of asking the charter chain to open the school in the wake of Derrion Albert's 2009 killing.
