Long Grove dad denies he hurt his infant son

A Long Grove man pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges he slammed his 3-month-old son into a changing table.

Daniel Mitchell, 41, is charged with aggravated battery to a child in the Oct. 22 attack.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Tim Niehus said Countryside Rescue was summoned to Mitchell's home at 25910 Tahoe Drive because the infant, Alex, was acting sick and lethargic.

The boy was taken to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where a CAT scan revealed injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Lake County sheriff's detectives were called and said Mitchell admitted he may have slammed the boy too hard into a changing table.

The infant was transferred to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where Niehus said he remains in serious condition.

Circuit Judge James Booras scheduled a trial date of Feb. 29 and told Mitchell to appear in court Feb. 8. Mitchell is held on $75,000 bond.

Niehus said Mitchell faces a mandatory prison sentence of six to 30 years if convicted.
