Warren 68, Niles North 17

The future Sarah Boothes and Lory Shaws got together with their heroes recently for a girls-night-out.

The bonding between the middle school and high school girls basketball players included making posters, which are displayed on a wall behind a basket in Warren's gym.

Shaw's reads, "You Rock My Socks."

"It's saying like, 'You're the bomb,' " explained the senior forward, laughing.

Not only does Lory Shaw rock, so does her team.

The Blue Devils sure socked it to Niles North in the teams' first game in Warren's holiday tournament Friday night. Boothe had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Shaw added 12 points and 5 boards, as Warren cruised to a 68-17 win.

Warren improved to 13-0. It was the most points the Blue Devils had scored in a game this season and equaled the fewest they had allowed. They also limited Zion-Benton to 17 points.

"Today was the last day of finals so you're always worried about how your kids are going to come out mentally after that experience," Warren coach John Stanczykiewicz said. "We talked about it all week in practice, and I thought they did a nice job. They played to their ability, they played hard."

Warren outscored Niles North 17-0 in the first quarter, as Boothe totaled 10 points and 6 rebounds. The Vikings went 0 of 9 from the floor and committed 8 turnovers.

The Blue Devils enjoyed a 32-5 lead at halftime, with the Vikings having made just 1 field goal.

"We always try to come out hard on defense," Shaw said.

Stanczykiewicz rested his starters the entire fourth quarter. He played 14 girls and 13 scored.

Kristin Mierzejewski received her fourth start, replacing Erin Norwood, and scored 7 points.

"Erin's knee has been bothering her so Kristin has stepped in and has done a nice job," Stanczykiewicz said. "She gives us a nice little spark. She runs the floor very well. She's a more guard-like player so we can put her on a guard that runs the floor, and generally she does a pretty nice job."

The tournament resumes today with four games, including Warren vs. Carmel at noon.

Deerfield 55, Lake Forest 51: In the first game at Warren, the Warriors led 49-35 after three quarters and hung on in their tournament opener.

Deerfield's Dani Ripkey led all scorers with 20 points. Kiley Hierl added 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Collee Forrest had 12 points and 6 boards.

Lake Forest's Claire Dimario scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Lauren Laduke finished with 13 points.
