GPS a hot item, police say

Aurora police say there have been nine reports of stolen GPS systems from vehicles since the start of the new year. The Global Positioning Systems are being swiped out of parked vehicles with owners all leaving the devices in clear view. Eight of the nine reports have come from the city's far east side with most occurring in shopping mall or apartment complex lots. In seven of the nine reports, windows were smashed and only GPS systems were taken; in others, items such as an I-Pass, radar detector and DVD player also were taken. Keep valuables concealed, police say.

Suspect's fitness queried

A DuPage County judge ordered a mental health exam Friday for a former aspiring pro football player accused of tossing his neighbor to his death in Lombard. Hubert "Boo Boo" Thompson earlier was found fit to stand trial, but Judge Robert Anderson ordered the exam after the defense attorney questioned his client's mental health. Thompson, 29, is facing first-degree murder charges for the March 30, 2007, death of his neighbor, James A. Malone, 66, who was killed after being thrown to his death from a third-floor balcony. Thompson is a former high school and college football standout who played for the Chicago Enforcers of the failed XFL in 2001.

Inmate faces new charges:

A DuPage County grand jury this week indicted a twice-convicted killer on attempted escape charges on suspicion he tried to break out of the Wheaton jail while awaiting trial for a third murder in a death-penalty case. Edward Tenney, 48, formerly of Aurora, also is charged with criminal damage to state-supported property. He is accused of removing mortar around his cell window and cinder blocks in the cell, days after Christmas, then replacing it with a look-alike substance. Tenney is accused of killing Jerry D. Weber, 24, in April 1992 during a robbery after his van broke down east of Aurora. He also is serving two life prison terms for the 1993 slayings of dairy heiress Mary Jill Oberweis, 56, and her neighbor, Virginia Johannessen, 75, near Aurora, in Kane County.
