While many spend a lifetime figuring out what they want to be when they grow up, Shane Wimmer's lightbulb moment came when he was 8 years old and watching an episode of “Unique Sweets” on the Cooking Channel. The show featured an old-time candy shop, and the treat being made was salted caramel. “It looked challenging to me,” said the now 21-year-old Libertyville High School grad. “That got the passion going. There were big dreams right away.”

Barrington OKs new Porsche dealership — but there’s a catch

Barrington village trustees gave the green light Monday for a new 110,400-square-foot Porsche dealership on the Motor Werks campus, despite objections from its neighbors. However, trustees said no to red LED lights required by Porsche on the new building at the corner of Dundee Road and Grove Avenue.

Restaurant Susie Sushi in Fox River Grove is closing because of ongoing landlord disputes. However, the owner promises to reopen at another location in the future. Susie Sushi, located at 700 Northwest Highway, will close Dec. 1 after operating for two years.

Plans for Wild Fork in Buffalo Grove back on

The on-again, off-again saga of the Buffalo Grove Wild Fork is back firmly in on mode. The specialty food retailer could open by February at 41 McHenry Road, near the intersection at Lake-Cook Road.

Could a second pot dispensary be headed to Mundelein?

A cannabis dispensary could fill a vacant restaurant building on Mundelein’s northwest side. Chicago-based Terrabis wants to convert the former Rosati’s Pizza at 3110 W. Route 60 into the village’s second pot shop. The 5,000-square-foot building is in the Mundelein Crossings plaza and has stood unused since 2023.

Weekend getaway led to Pizza Ranch chain choosing to build in Round Lake Beach

Pizza Ranch, one of the largest pizza chains in the Midwest, will be opening its first suburban Chicago location in Round Lake Beach. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held Nov. 14 for the new business at 780 E. Rollins Road, adjacent to the Meijer parking lot and behind McDonald’s and Arby’s in the Mallard Creek shopping center.

Carol Stream’s first data center going up at former Henkel site

Carol Stream’s first data center is being constructed in an industrial area north of North Avenue. The installation of precast concrete wall panels started Nov. 15 for a 90,301-square-foot, single-story data center on an 11.41-acre industrial property at 245 Kehoe Blvd., at Kimberly Drive, previously home to the Henkel Corporation business manufacturing and supply company.
