The candidate with will to fight guns

Gun violence prevention has become a major concern to many suburban voters. But there are legislators who lack the will to do something about this pervasive problem.

When canvassing in the areas in and around Barrington, I have a list of six major issues that I ask voters about. The list includes reproductive rights, education, environment, gun sense, health care and immigration. About 30% of voters respond their major concern is gun violence with reproductive rights and education also getting high number of responses.

The canvassing area is generally in the Illinois 52nd state representative district currently represented by Martin McLaughlin. Rep McLaughlin has opposed the assault weapons ban, the ban on ghost guns and voted against strengthening our red flag laws, to name just a few common sense bills he has opposed. He gets ratings from the NRA of over 90%, which means the NRA knows they can count on him to vote against any gun sense legislation proposed.

His votes on the issues should not be acceptable to anyone living in the 52nd District. His challenger on Nov. 5, is Maria Peterson, who has long been an advocate for common sense gun laws while being an active member of organizations such as Moms Demand Action. It’s time for the 52nd District to get a representative who actually represents them by electing Maria Peterson.
