Daily Herald photo contest winners for September 2024
Our top images for the month of September in the Daily Herald’s reader photo contest featured the beauty of nature, including plants, animals and country roads; as well as human-made creations, such as a mural in Naperville and the Big Boy locomotive.
This photo by William Sneed of Inverness rose to the top of this month’s entries with this lovely photo that he titled “Morning Dog Walk along a Country Road.” Sneed wrote, “I like it because it captures the serenity and beauty of a rural scene.”
Second place goes to Mike Weimer of St. Charles, who captured a pair of murals off Main Street in Naperville. “By using my iPhone’s panoramic photo setting, I was able to show both artists’ works in one image. And the walking person on the right gives a sense of scale to the scene.”
In third place is Connie J. Pfeifer of Libertyville with a close-up view of a coneflower. She writes, “Even in the pre-bloom stage (like in this photograph), I think these flowers are lovely to capture on film. The natural greenery in the yard where this flower blooms makes a great background for highlighting the subject matter.”
A trio of garter snakes in a Lake County forest preserve captured the attention of Rod Crandall of Buffalo Grove, and his picture takes fourth place. He writes, “I thought it was an unusual capture visible from the walking path.”
There were so many good images this month, we had to choose two as honorable mentions. Thomas Krashen of Naperville took this photo of a great blue heron on the DuPage River from the Naperville Riverwalk.
Also taking an honorable mention is Alison Doshen of Bolingbrook, who snapped this photo of the Big Boy No. 4014 as it traveled through nine states as part of Union Pacific’s “Heartland of America Tour.”
